In the vast majority of cases, the material used by Röthel for his sculptures is steel. In the course of the creation process, this seemingly unyielding, hard material is transformed into a soft curved form. Thomas Röthel forms his sculptures by turning the ingots around their own axis, either once or several times, and finally allows them to remain seemingly weightless. Through this new way of working with this material, the weight and gravity of this mass is questioned again and again.
The active engagement with his sculptures finds great appeal with the artist, for only those who look closely can see for themselves how the massive, hard bodies can be soft and organic at the same time. How the balance is maintained, although the weight should actually pull the whole form down into the depths. How the millimetre-thin rust thrives on the surfaces. How everything circles and rises and falls and goes.
