Markus Lüpertz combines legend and history at the same time.
While his contemporaries devoted themselves to Art Informel and Tachism, Lüpertz remained faithful to figurative painting after his training at the Werkkunstschule in Krefeld and the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. His oeuvre began with "dithyrambic painting", whose philosophical and mythological approach was based on Nitzsche and the god Dionysus. His mysterious elements, combined with oversized figurative painting, generate euphoric enthusiasm in the viewer. This was followed in the 1970s by an intensive examination of German history in the "German motifs". Still life-like military objects are intended to evoke the past war in a new aura.
Since 1980, Lüpertz has also been active as a sculptor and designs sculptures. Mythological or literary heroes come to life in a new bronze countenance. The imperfection of the imperfect sculptures, painted in colour according to ancient models, is intended to uphold the memory of what was once sublime and perfect in art.
In addition to his work as a painter, Lüpertz also works as a stage designer, poet and theatre producer and was director of the State Academy of Art in Düsseldorf from 1986 to 2003. In his work, he combines his personal sense of humour with his rebellious way of breaking the rules. The result is a mysterious oeuvre that is both an approach to the world and an interpretation of it.
